I got my first "good" fly rod the same way - Fenwick IM6 5wt. It was way longer than the rest of the stuff in the barrel. It had a cheap Medalist knockoff reel with a level line, about 10' feet of heavy mono, and a rubber spider with a couple legs missing. The rod's long gone but the reel's still around here somewhere. Ten bucks as I recall.
